The American Church Institute 
for Negroes issues a report cover- 
ing five years of its work. It has 
ing its live years of work. It has 
now under its supervision live 
important institutions in the 
south, while two other large nor-

to be taken under its charge. The 
Institute is making cvei\v effort to 
help meet the need of the I,.500,-

Tire parish of St. Mark's, Alanch 
Chu n k, on the occasion of the I’e- 
opening of its church, Avliich bad 
been remodeled and beautified, 
gave a thank-offering of $1,OCO 
for diocesan missions and another 
|i ,000 for general missions. It 
was not content to do well for it- 
self without doing Avell for others, 
and this is the result of better un- 
derstanding of the missionary 
idccal. 


As a result of tlie Church’s work 
on tire Oneida Indian Resci'vr- 
tion, conducted thru nicany years, 
there is a fine stone church and 
parisli house, a hospitcal, mission 
house and other buildings, a com- 
municant list of ncai'lj 600, and a 
Christian coramunitv Avhich will 
compare favorably Avith any 
among wliite people. 


The meeting of the “Society of 
American Indians,” held at Co 
iurabus, Ohio, on October 12-16, 
brot together foi' the first time the 
leaders among' these people to take 
cjunsel coneerning tlicir lace. It 
was encouraging to find among 
these three priests of the Church, 
one of whem — the Rev. Sherman 
Coolidge — was given a place on 
the Executive Committee. 


A paiTichial conference on mis- 
sions conducted at All Saints, 
Dorchester, Boston, Mass., during 
an entire Aveek, avos a most encou- 
raging success, and it is believed 
that other earnest parishes Avill 
foHoAv the example there .jet. 


.A little hospital with fourteen 
bed^, asked to take care suddenly 
of eightyone victims of a railAay, 
disiister, and doing it efficiently — ' 
this is the record which the Gdod 
Samaritan Hospital, for coloked 
people, Charlotte, North Carolina, 
has to its credit. It is not strange 
that this worthy charit}^ is asking 
for better accommodation, espec- 
ially as this is the second occasion 
when such a tremendous demand 
has been made upon them. 



The apportionment in foice for 
the present fiscal year is much 
larger than any heforq made. 
This is due to the fact that' for 
many years no increase was made 
in the apportionment to the 
Church, altho the expenses of 
the work were rapidl 3 ’ increasing. 
The result was a growing* deficit, 
which, together Avith the enlarged 
needs, is now being met by a very 
c.ansiderable advance. The task 
set is not an impossible one, — in- 
deed, the sum is rather small com- 
pared with whfit other Christian 
folk are giving. The Church can 
do for her Master whatever, in 
awakened love and devotion, she 
desires to do.

Bishop Rowe, of xVlaska, has 
declined the cleclion, to South 
Dakota and the Presi ling Bishop 
has confirmed his right so to do. 
In sending his declination Bishop 
Rowe says : “I know th^t kindly 
consideration for my henllh may 
have been p.artfy the motive in 
electing me as Bisnop of South 
Dakota, but my health is not so 
affected as to interfere Avith my 
work, and I am about to intercede 
with Congress for some remedial 
legislation on behalf of the na- 
tives of Alaska. I think also ihat 
it would be loss difficult for me to 
continue the work in Alaska where 
I knoAV and am known, than to 
take up ncAv work in a new field.” 
We believe tliat the judgment of 
the Church will cordial Iv approve 
the action of Bishop Rowe and 
that he is doing a worth 3 ^ service 
in remaining at his post.
